Why Mangalica?

Mangalica – a rediscovered treasure trove of traditional flavour

Today, small breeders and eco-farmers are returning to Mangalica, looking for more than just numbers in tables. Mangalica is not for the mass market – it is for those who know how to wait. Because just as its exceptional meat is born, so is honest quality. At a slow pace, in harmony with nature, without shortcuts.

If you're wandering around southern Slovakia or Hungary and are tempted by the smell of sausages, you might not even know that the original Čabajská sausage was once made exclusively from mangalica meat. However, during socialism, this breed almost disappeared from the face of the earth - animal fat was considered unhealthy, vegetable oils were preferred, and interest in mangalica quickly declined.

Only a few individuals survived, which were saved literally at the twelfth hour. Today, the Mangalica is considered a national treasure in Hungary. In Hungary, the Mangalica has also been recognized as a protected genetic resource and receives state support. Mangalica products (e.g. hams, sausages, lard) are often presented as luxurious and traditional products. That is why we are proud to be able to offer you a selection of the best of Mangalica - products that combine unique taste, artisanal quality and respect for tradition.

Marbled to perfection

It's not just fat, it's gold between the fibers.

What does mangalica have in common with high-quality beef? Seemingly nothing. After all, these are two completely different types of meat. Wrong. We can determine the quality of beef based on marbling – that is, the amount of fat in the meat. The Wagyu type is the best known in this regard, as it contains the largest amount of intramuscular fat, which gives it a very specific taste and irreplaceable tenderness. The same applies to mangalica. The best and most visible results in mangalica are at the age of 2 years. It is at this time that they acquire marbling comparable to Wagyu meat.

And why are we actually telling you this?

Because our passion for exceptional meat doesn’t stop with Mangalica. With the same respect for the animal, patience during fattening and attention to detail, we also started breeding Wagyu. We took advantage of years of experience from our Mangalica farm and set out in search of a taste that is among the most recognized in the world — to faraway Japan, where the legend of Wagyu is born.

Why we decided just for curly piggies?

The Mangalica is a breed of pig that sounds almost exotic today, but was once a common part of farms in the lands of the former Great Hungary. Its roots go back to the 19th century, when it was created by crossing local pigs with wild breeds. Thanks to its curly sheep-like coat, you will notice it at first glance - but its true uniqueness lies deeper, in the meat and fat with an unmistakable taste.

In the days of industrial agriculture, it almost disappeared – it was replaced by fast-growing, economically “more advantageous” breeds. Mangalica grows slowly, lives more peacefully and needs its own space. But this is precisely its strength. This breed has preserved something that the modern world often loses – naturalness, resilience and authentic taste.

Mangalica is a typically Hungarian breed, deeply connected to the culture and traditions of this region. The area where our farm is located – Hurbanovo, Pavlov Dvor 9, was once part of the historical Kingdom of Hungary. That is why we see Mangalica breeding as a way to honor this shared past and build on the rich heritage of honest farming that has its roots here.
